|
|
Dear parents,
I would like to ask for your permission to post on Youtube any video of your child’s activities that I filmed in class on Youtube. The video clips will showcase classroom activities. Parents will get a chance to see how class activities enhance students’ Chinese, through oral presentations and plays. My purposes for posting the video clips on Youtube are to give students long lasting memories of their activities in Chinese school and to provide convenient access for parents to see their children’s progress in Chinese class. If you agree to allow me to post your child’s class activities on Youtube, please complete the form and have your child bring it back in the next class meeting. This media release form will serve as a permission to post video in public and it will remain on school file.
The hard copy of the media release form from South Bay Chinese School had been given to your children last class meeting. Please sign it and have your children bring it back to me if you agree with it.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you very much and have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Fanyi Yang |

Dear Parents,
Can not believe it is November already.
We have done the poster drawing contest, penmanship contest, PA meeting, mid-autumn festival potluck, fire drill, fund project for levels K-3. One more fun project - Chinese knotting -snowman for levels 4-9 before the winter break.
So far, the school has sent our teachers to four different workshops and seminars.
Seven teachers went to the AP Chinese workshop hosted by the California Chinese Teacher Association;
Two teachers went to high-tech digital teaching Chinese workshop hosted by the California State University at Long Beach;
Fifteen attended the two Professors from China hosted by the South Bay Chinese School;
Sixteen teachers attended SBCS teacher development meeting and shared the topics with each other of the Summer three days SCCCS teacher conference.
Next Sunday (11/15), there is an interesting workshop of how to teach students to memorize the Chinese characters.
On the 11/21 weekend, there is a three days world language convention hosted by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language. Two of our teachers will stay there four days to learn.
There will be more workshops, seminars, talks, and conference in the future. Teacher Zhang and I will present a talk/workshop at the SCCCS Spring Teacher Conference in February.
Should you have any questions regarding the curriculum, please feel free to contact me or the curricular directors Mrs. Roswaty Lim and Mr. Mark Jen.
Thank you.

Palos VerdesPeninsula Unified School District
Superintendent’s Office
October 29, 2009
The U.S. Department of Education has announced the award of more than $12.4 million in Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grants to local and state school systems in 24 states and the District of Columbia. The grants are aimed at promoting the instruction of foreign languages critical to national security. These languages include Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Russian and languages in the Indic, Iranian and Turkic language families. "Communicating with our international neighbors not only promotes peaceful relations but also equips students for employment and to compete in the global marketplace," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "These grants will help strengthen both our national and economic security."
Of the $12.4 million awarded over, $3.1 million went to local education agencies working in partnership with higher education institutions. As one of the 12 agencies funded for this prestigious award, Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District (PVPUSD) will receive approximately $300,000 for each of five years, a total of 1.5 million dollars over five years. Partnerships with UCLA, USC’s U.S. China Institute, and Cal State Long Beach as well as Palos Verdes and South Bay Chinese Schools and other influential business groups and organizations will offer strong support for the PVPUSD’s program.
The PVPUSD proposal, PV Mandarin Acquisition Project (PVMAP), provides Mandarin Chinese instruction to students as they progress through elementary and secondary school with college links and opportunities for intense and advanced language study. With full participation it is expected that students will approach superior levels of proficiency upon completion of high school. Internships, career exploration, and advisement for the continued study of Chinese language and culture provide the necessary information and experiences to equip students to compete in the 21st Century global marketplace. The four elementary schools in which all students participate in Mandarin language learning include Lunada Bay, Montemalaga, Point Vicente, and Cornerstone. Currently, Palos Verdes High, Palos Verdes Peninsula High, and Palos Verdes Intermediate schools offer Mandarin Chinese with classes soon to be added at Miraleste and Ridgecrest Intermediate schools.
District leaders are proud of the world language programs and how they prepare students to be competent global citizens equipped with skills and knowledge to succeed in the 21st Century. |
