Palos VerdesPeninsula Unified School District
Superintendent’s Office
October 29, 2009
The U.S. Department of Education has announced the award of more than $12.4 million in Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grants to local and state school systems in 24 states and the District of Columbia. The grants are aimed at promoting the instruction of foreign languages critical to national security. These languages include Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Russian and languages in the Indic, Iranian and Turkic language families. "Communicating with our international neighbors not only promotes peaceful relations but also equips students for employment and to compete in the global marketplace," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "These grants will help strengthen both our national and economic security."
Of the $12.4 million awarded over, $3.1 million went to local education agencies working in partnership with higher education institutions. As one of the 12 agencies funded for this prestigious award, Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District (PVPUSD) will receive approximately $300,000 for each of five years, a total of 1.5 million dollars over five years. Partnerships with UCLA, USC’s U.S. China Institute, and Cal State Long Beach as well as Palos Verdes and South Bay Chinese Schools and other influential business groups and organizations will offer strong support for the PVPUSD’s program.
The PVPUSD proposal, PV Mandarin Acquisition Project (PVMAP), provides Mandarin Chinese instruction to students as they progress through elementary and secondary school with college links and opportunities for intense and advanced language study. With full participation it is expected that students will approach superior levels of proficiency upon completion of high school. Internships, career exploration, and advisement for the continued study of Chinese language and culture provide the necessary information and experiences to equip students to compete in the 21st Century global marketplace. The four elementary schools in which all students participate in Mandarin language learning include Lunada Bay, Montemalaga, Point Vicente, and Cornerstone. Currently, Palos Verdes High, Palos Verdes Peninsula High, and Palos Verdes Intermediate schools offer Mandarin Chinese with classes soon to be added at Miraleste and Ridgecrest Intermediate schools.
District leaders are proud of the world language programs and how they prepare students to be competent global citizens equipped with skills and knowledge to succeed in the 21st Century. |
