Seminar topic one/讲座题目一：海外汉字教学研究 Teaching of Chinese Characters
Prof. Yanhua Ma, Ph.D. in Linguistics, Professor, Beijing Normal University Prof. Ma has been working in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language since 1988. She has taught all types of Chinese language skill courses for international students, as well as teaching graduate level Chinese Phonetics, Chinese Philology, and Modern Linguistic Theories, etc.Her publications include six volumes of TCSL course materials and more than forty papers in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.

Seminar topic two /讲座题目二：海外中文教育中的儿童心理学 Child Psychology in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language

Dear students and parents of Chinese AP class,

(1) This coming Saturday is our mid-term. Please bring your computer and arrive on time. From 8:30 AM to 9:05 AM, we will discuss our test briefly. We will start our test at 9:05 AM sharp (Writing test will be the first section).

(2) The test will cover, at least, three of the four sections, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Once I figure out the details of how to record students' voice from the computer, I will make the decision then.

(3) "Phrases/words" are the "building blocks" to advance your level of Chinese language. For the last several weeks, every week each student has received a copy of key phrases that we have learned from last week. Please try to memorize them and use them whenever you can.

Dear students and parents of AP Test Pre. class,

(1) Based upon our past test results, we have seen big improvemnet on "Listening comprehension" area. We also seen some improvements in the story Narration area (Writing). Good job, girls!

The results also showed that we need to focus on the following areas (by sequence),
(1.1) Reading Comprension (the ability to recognize the words and phrases)
(1.2) Culture presentation (Speaking and Chinese culture)

Therefore, we will do more teaching and class exercise in those two areas.

活動主旨：洛杉磯世界日報與麥當勞為鼓勵並促進親子互動，邀請南加州中文學校聯合
會共同舉辦複合式的親子活動。活動結合徵圖短文比賽、親子活動、親子為
主題的演講，旨在促進家庭和諧，子女與父母間親密互動關係。
複合式的親子活動：
A.親子徵圖短文比賽(一張最溫馨且感人的照片及短文)。
B.朱宗慶打擊樂團帶領親子活動。
C.頒獎儀式、專家親子講座及作品展出。

活動辦法：
A. 親子徵圖短文比賽
歡迎4至12歲兒童將與親子女互動最感人的照片，加上100字以內短文，郵寄或電郵至本報洛杉磯社參加徵圖文比賽，照片以彩色照片為主，請註明參賽者姓名、地址、電話和參賽作品說明。
獎金：第一名(一個名額)獎金$400，
第二名(一個名額)獎金$250，

(2) Last week, we started adding Chinese Jeopardy to our teaching course. The main purpose of these games is to help students review what we have learned so far. We will try to keep this up to keep students interested. 中文问答游戏, 目的是要帮助学生复习所学过的东西 (中文問答遊戲, 目的是要幫助學生複習所學過的東西).

(3) Starting 11/07, we will practice singing a song called “Dragon Descendants " as our short Chinese Program 龙的传人（龍的傳人）。

Dear Parents, November 6, 2009

Can not believe it is November already.

We have done the poster drawing contest, penmanship contest, PA meeting, mid-autumn festival potluck, fire drill, fund project for levels K-3. One more fun project - Chinese knotting -snowman for levels 4-9 before the winter break.

So far, the school has sent our teachers to four different workshops and seminars.

Seven teachers went to the AP Chinese workshop hosted by the California Chinese Teacher Association;

Two teachers went to high-tech digital teaching Chinese workshop hosted by the California State University at Long Beach;

Fifteen attended the two Professors from China hosted by the South Bay Chinese School;

Sixteen teachers attended SBCS teacher development meeting and shared the topics with each other of the Summer three days SCCCS teacher conference.

Next Sunday (11/15), there is an interesting workshop of how to teach students to memorize the Chinese characters.

On the 11/21 weekend, there is a three days world language convention hosted by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language. Two of our teachers will stay there four days to learn.

There will be more workshops, seminars, talks, and conference in the future. Teacher Zhang and I will present a talk/workshop at the SCCCS Spring Teacher Conference in February.

Hi Nancy,

The car wash will be using the faculty parking lot . You probably will need to use
the student parking lot to park your staff for that day. Also, the fire
access road will be difficult to use. Students may block that road as
they did last year.The car wash people will be on campus at 7:30 to set
up and rope off portions of the parking lot that they will need. I'm
sorry for the inconvenience! This happens a couple of times of the
year.Thank you for understanding, Butch.
