Strange question from American Learner

OK I was wondering, and someone asked by yesterday for peoples names in ALPHABETICAL order, I was stumped -

In america we often put people in Alphabetical order so ...

what do Chinese folks do? Age order, Height Order, is there an order not Pin Ying order unless the name has been translated to Pin Ying?

Check out this entry for Surname order: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surname_stroke_order

For surnames with same stroke count, then check this entry for radical stroke order: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collation#Radical-and-stroke_sorting

There are usually 3 characters in a Chinese name - surname followed by the given name. Sort the surname first, then the first character of the give name, etc.
